Deck Description

After running this a few times I got good results. Multiple ways to finish your opponent. Having a whip of Erebos allows me to full out attack with my rat army and completely replenish my tokens by using a plague of vermin. Piper, gnawer, and slumlord really help you get through defenses. Just tapping marrow gnawer with Ayara on the field has the potential to end a game as well. Piper of the swarm really breathed new life into these little guys.

How to Play

Easily the best flow with this deck is a turn 2 piper. From that point I am creating a token every turn and saving the rats in my hand for later. Once a vanquisher’s banner hits the field I will unload my hand and yield an extra draw per rat. That method has worked wonders.

Deck discussion for New modern rats

Are you aware that you can include more than 4 Rat Colony in your deck?
Since Rat Colony is strictly better than Swarm of Rats, you should at the very least replace the latter with the former.

Plague of Vermins is a very bad card. 7 mana for a symmetrical effect that merely produces tokens at the additional cost of 1 life per token? It's also way beyond your mana curve.

Swarmyard comes into mind.

Plague of Vermins could combo with Ayara and it does make other rats bigger, though that might put in the "win-more" category.

I agree about it's mana cost though. Something like Priest of the Forgotten Gods could fix that.

Great idea with rat colony! Completely overlooked that. Plague has been a very fun card in the deck. Big mana cost but in a stalemate scenario, it normally wins me the game. The deck produces enough life that the negative effect of plague has not been a bother.. also, when my opponent opts to create tokens, the banners gives me an advantage with power and toughness.

Also, liking the idea of the priest. I may try that out. Thanks for the input both of you.

I still don't know, for 7 mana you could Mind Twist his entire hand (and are more flexible to cast it earlier) or you could play cards like Sorin's Vengeance. Just saying.

I do love this deck...it's amazing!!! I agree that plague of vermin is expensive, but it is a game winner. The rest of the deck hovers around 2-5 mana...which is good. I'm wondering if there is a one-drop rat to run to have a turn one play...or even running bontu's monument and dark ritual.

There are actually 10 one-mana-Rats, but only 2 of them don't suck:
- Typhoid Rats
- Drainpipe Vermin

I swapped out a banner and 3 rat colony for 4 typhoid. The turn 1 deathtouch is a nice deterrent. Good protection early game.

I completely agree...having typhoid as an early game deterrent, is great!! And it gives you turn one play!

It's not just for turn 1, though. Having some one-drops also helps out smoothening the mana curve. This deck has lots of 2-drops but only few 3-drops. So you could also play a Typhoid Rat in addition to a Rat Colony in turn 3.

Oh I completely agree. It needed the 1 drops for mana curve
