This deck was built around the explore mechanic, and specifically the bonus given to Shadowed Caravel. The trials and cartouches came in as a nice low cost way to do some control and buff up creatures at the same time. the 5 different 1 drop spells were just to get a mix of different things while play testing this deck to see which I liked, though honestly the mix is fun to play with since they're all really nice in their own way.
Just pump out the creatures and attack/defend as you see fit. Don't wait for the ship to play your explorers but play the ship before them if you can for the best effect. There are enough cartouches that you should be fine playing them even without any trials on the board but you can hang on to them if you want to play the more expensive trial first and then get it back right away. though the haste trials are great early game to get some quick attacks in.
