Deck Description

I'm not big on three color decks at all. I usually end up having to mulligan a good amount before I get a usable hand but I'll try this deck out and see how it runs. There is a good amount of draw and scry in the deck so I'm feeling confident about it.

How to Play

Keep aggro away with board wipes and spot removal. This deck should be able to do a better job at that because it has a total of 14 spot removal spells compared to the 10 that were in my U/W control deck. The sideboard is pretty much built for going against a quick and heavy aggro deck like mono red. Only thing I have for control is Pithing Needle and Gainsay but that should be enough. Elspeth and Assemble are the win cons and make a pretty decent combo, especially after you pop Elspeth.

Deck discussion for Stars and Stripes Control

This is obviously going to draw a lot of comparisons to Esper control, and I wonder if the DD from red is as good as doom blade and thought seize. It seems that a big advantage of DD is that it allows you to target the player for a faster win; however, the DD you are currently packing is not very effective for that purpose. Maybe throw in syncopate to help out more in the early game, and then run more powerful DD like more Warleader's? Or a couple Chandra's Phoenix might even work since you can return it to your hand after Supreme Verdicting.

Also, side-boarding Skullcracks might be a good idea.

It's more for spot removal rather than targeting the player. I could use it for that if I needed to though. I wanted to try and fit Syncopate but just not sure if I want to drop anything. If I were going to drop something I guess it would be one Azorius Charm for a Syncopate. As for Skullcrack, not really needing it. If my opponent wants to gain life, let him. If I can stall the game out he'll be overwhelmed by Assemble and Elspeth. Thanks for your input though.

Good thoughts. I was thinking Skullcrack for when you are up against control, but you are probably correct with your deck's current configuration. If you tried to go for more DD that could potentially be used against the player, the extra DD and Skullcrack might help give you an edge over other control decks because they are just as happy to stall the game out as you are. It would also allow you to target your sideboard against other control decks or Boros Aggro decks by converting your deck to more of a Boros Aggro deck in those matchups.

Another card that would help against Control without changing things much is Counterflux.

I used to sideboard in Jace, Memory Adept against control decks to mill them out. I didn't fit him into the sideboard this time, not sure why. I love Counterflux but prefer the scry that Dissolve offers. Syncopate over Counterfulx just cause of the possibility to use it early game if needed.

What do you bring Auralia in against?

Nothing really. I just thought she'd be a fun alternate win condition. Get a bunch of 1/1's, pop Elspeth and then play Aurelia.

Hmm...I like it. A guy at the shop I play at on Fridays runs a deck with Auralia Niv in it main deck. When it works it does really cool things, but main deck it was too clunky and held too many non-control slots. Sideboard I think its pretty cool tech.

Any reason you aren't running counterflux as a 4 of here?

I just want to have the scry option.

ah...counterflux is crazy good against the control mirror. Id run it in addition to the dissolve. Maybe instead of the magma jet. Jet doesn't really deal with all of the threats you want it to. Id run one more strike and two counterflux main and then maybe even find a spot for flux in the board too. It is the ultimate answer.

I'll find room for it. I really like having the scry 2 in Magma Jet.

Yeah, I tried really hard to make it work, but shock just isn't lighting bolt. If they had given it like a 2 and a red cost and three damage then id been all about it.
