Deck Description

The main focus of this deck is to deny the opponent the ability to draw most of their cards and eventually eliminate them through library depletion. In doing this, this deck uses a very strong defence, re-usability of its own cards, as well as powerful milling cards.

Many of your creatures can serve several purposes, often being reliable blockers through regeneration (Nightscape Familiar or strong defence (Vedalken Entrancer, Belltower Sphinx) while having a different primary utility (discounts, milling, etc.)

How to Play

You have comparatively limited options early in play, which means you have to get down your line of defence first. At the 2 to 3 mana range you can play a number of creatures with strong blocking potential, such as Fog Bank, Wall of Tears, and Nightscape Familiar (which also reduces the cost of all your blue spells by 1).

Once you have a core of 3-4 blockers down you can start the "dance" of milling. By now, chances are that you have drawn a Jace's Phantasm - this cheap little guy is an absolute moster, providing you with serious damage opportunities. Play him along with strong cheap milling cards like Mind Sculpt and Paranoid Delusions, possibly attaching the latter's cipher to him.

As soon as you draw "big hitter" mills such as Mirko Vosk or Mind Grind, use them with the best potential result, as often as you can. You can reuse your milling sorceries and instants through Relearn and Archaeomancers, while you can grab specific sorcery and instant cards you might need with the Mystical Tutor, itself an instant.

If you get some of your defenders later in game and don't need them, don't despair: your Drift of Phantasms can be transmuted into a Curse of the Bloody Tome, Psychic Strike, or Relearn, and can be done so both early as well as late in game if you don't need an extra blocker.

Even your basic counter, Psychic Strike, will mill somewhat, as well as benefit from Nightscape Familiar's discount ability. Later in game, steady millers such as Vedalken Entrancers and discouraging defenders such as the Belltower Sphinx can further assist you at both defence as well as depleting an opponent's library.

Remember that your focus is not trying to damage, though Jace's Phantasm is a nice option for that: your focus is trying to deplete the opponent's library. If you can't deal damage but don't have to worry about your life total, that is perfectly acceptable.
