A Combo deck for modern that can win extremely fast, but can also win mid-late game as well. The deck is very resilient as the entire combo is instant speed. And the deck is fairly consistent due to the multiple avenues to victory.
You can bin and reanimate a Gris with Goryo's Vengeance as early as T2. . ..Extremely rarely even t1 if you are absurdly lucky. Then finish em off with Soul Spikes. But normally it's better to wait until your opponents EOT to reanimate because then you get to untap on your turn with Gris, which opens up more options to get the win. Now you can draw into Soul Spikes and Lightning Bolts. Also a good trick to remember- If you draw into Borborygmos and another Goryo's Vengeance you can end your turn discard Borb and the rest of your hand but keep a Vengeance and a handful of lands. Then you can immediately reanimate Borb and discard all those lands for the win. The 2nd option for comboing is getting Gris into the grave and cast Nectrotic Ooze. Now you can draw with Ooze and do the same thing as option 1. A few cool things with Ooze. If you have Lotleth Troll in your grave, or in play, you can draw into Borb, discard him, then discard all your lands for the win. Also remember that this entire process is instant speed. For example if your opponent tries to Path to Exile your Ooze, you can just draw a ton of cards in response, and do the whole combo before Path ever resolves. If for some reason you can't seem to combo, or your opponent is stacked with grave hate, you can still beatdown with big regenerating Trolls, 4/3 Oozes, Spikes, and Bolts.

Is this... Modern Tin Fins?!

There is actually a faster version that's a little bit more like tin fins. Here's an examplehttp://www.mtgtop8.com/event?e=4430&d=225728There are a few variations though. I have seen people playing Lotus Bloom also.I think Todd Anderson started playing thishttp://www.mtgtop8.com/event?e=5655&d=232787..but Lotleth Troll is super sick here, so i really wanted to jam some of those in. All of his abilities are amazing here whether it's actually Troll activation it or if it's Ooze. +1+1-ing ooze gets him out of Bolt range, regenerating isn't bad, and making himself a discard outlet is awesome.I like this deck a lot because it's incredibly versatile and resilient. I have combo'd out through Silence, Counters, Removal. Having a combo that's all instant speed and activated abilities is just insane.
Yeah, I saw that. And the Lotus Bloom list is kind of meh to me, it's a neat idea, but so was quasi-SI.Lotleth Troll is just too awesome to not want to, discard outlet, massive beater, ect. It's the perfect BG creature. It's quite epic in that regard, and makes me think of Spiral Tide a bit.
why soul spike? If u want to throw it into the graveyard u should not exile. i would use thought gorger or one with nothing instead
Same reason that Burn in Legacy runs Fireblast, the alternative casting cost has no mana requirement. I wouldn't put it on the same level as Force of Will, but manaless casting is still a big deal, even if it's not a counter.
Soul Spike because of what Jens said, but also because it combos with Griselbrands ability. You draw a ton of cards off Gris then use your Soul Spike for free to deal dmg and gain life so you can then draw more cards off Gris and play more Soul Spikes.
This just may be the most ingenious Modern deck, I´ve ever laid my eyes upon. Again, sir, you amaze with your work. I really wish I had the dough for this so I could join in on WNM where they play Modern. Besides Lotleth, one of my favorites: Necrotic OozeAlso Soul Spike and Grisel... the combo´s seem endless!
Can you explain the thoughts behind adding 3x Simian Spirit Guide and 3x Sylvan Caryatid?
Deathrite Shaman was originally in those slots, and with him banned there is no real substitute. At first i tried Birds of Paradise and Grim Lavamancer, but eventually switched it up.Sylvan Caryatid helps ramp into Ooze, can sometimes block dudes, and can't be Bolted. Spirit Guide ramps, and can make a t1 possible in Magical Christmas Land.. but also the Spirit Guides makes finishing the game with Griselbrand easier. That way you can draw into Soul Spikes, as well as Guides and Bolts. Also they are both creatures that can be discarded to Lotleth Troll.
I can get behind the idea of the Spirit Guides, but I have my doubts about the Sylvan Caryatids. In my world Inquisition of Kozilek or Thoughtseize seems better in that spot to fight through all the U/R decks. Any thoughts :)?I have played this deck since post Deathrite Shaman ban and it feels weaker now :/ The deck operates at instant speed anyhow so playing vs. the shaman have never really been an issue. I've been playing with 3 discard spells and a few pieces to make the combo aspect stronger with some dredge cards, but I win less with out the shaman... What's your experience with deck since the ban? Finaly I want to say that the addition of Lightning Bolts is something I only have seen in your tech and it made the deck signifantly stronger. Kudos to you for that :)
I kind of have to agree that hand disruption would be better for this deck than Sylvan Caryatid.
I know it may not seem like it on paper but Caryatid really does hold it's spot well. it ramps, it blocks, it's a creature for Troll and Salvage, and can't be hit with removal. It may not be perfect, but so far it's the best thing i'v found. These are all things i'v either tried, or thought about:Pentad PrismSylvan CaryatidBirds of ParadiseGrim LavamancerWill-o'-the-WispInquisition of KozilekPillar of FlameAbrupt DecayTime of NeedWhip of ErebosThrough the BreachFauna ShamanTarmogoyfZombie InfestationReally what the deck wants is Deathrite Shaman. Like you were saying, it never really feared opposing Shamans, and our own Shamans did so much for the deck. Being able to ramp, grave hate, shock the opp, and heal ourselves is so much, and there just is no good replacement. So yeah i do think the deck is weaker now, but it is still pretty good. The deck is pretty consistent compared to the other Reanimator lists, and the unique way it can combo out makes this deck a blast to play either way.The reason i don't have any discard maindeck is because i'm running Cavern of souls in the main. . Generally, against control you can slow roll , and dig for Cavern and Ooze with Salvage and Looting. Control decks actually get eaten up by this deck most of the time. There are just too many way to win for control to stop them all, and Cavern of Souls is legit. Then g2 you get to bring in 5 discard, another Cavern, and your good to go.It could be worth trying discard md, but i really think having a decent creature count for Troll and Salvage is important. Troll can turn into a big regenerating Goyf pretty quickly, but if you don't have anything to feed him, hes not gonna be as effective.
Going to something like 4 Simian Spirit Guide3 Inquisition of Kozilek3 Lightning Boltcould maybe work. It's at least worth worth trying.
Could try Manamorphose, adds two mana of any color plus, it's a nice draw advantage if needed, great card for non-blue decks.
