Ever wanted to play legacy but just can't afford those dang lands? Don't run them! Can't afford to pay even 300 dollars for a deck? How about over half of that costs is gone? This is my Legacy budget deck. It won't win you any tournaments, but you can say you have a legacy deck. And for $130 to boot, I'd say it's a good deal.
As you can imagine, this deck doesn't quite run like a regular Magic deck. It can be pretty mean, but it takes some piloting, and user beware, It has almost no answers to a card that stops the deck cold. Anyways, here's how to use my silly little no land deck.
Unlike most decks, you want to go second, as it gives you the draw. You will draw a card and have 8 cards in hand, and immediately move to discard step. Here's where you begin doing things.
The best target to discard is Phantasmagorian, but any dredger will work. Discarding Phantasmagorian allows you to use his second ability to discard 3 cards to return him to hand. If it benefits you further, put his ability on the stack twice and ditch 6 cards to bring him back. (cards in your hand aren't very helpful. You need those bad boys in grave.) All of this of course is happening on your opponents turn 2. You know have a dredger in grave and your deck is ready to take off.
Let's continue imagining that the hand isn't perfect but is pretty darn good. We ditched Phantasmagorian and used his ability once to ditch a Nether Shadow and an Ichorid, and then a Golgari Grave Troll, in that order. (Order matters for the shadow.) And say we kept a street wraith in hand. On your opponents end step, pay 2 life to cycle the wraith and attempt to draw 2. Except instead of drawing, return the grave troll to your hand and dredge 6. Now you should have plenty of fun stuff in grave including another dredger. Fun!
I'm going to break our turn 2 down in each separate phase excluding untap because all that happens is we take a small moment to watch it pass by. Move onto upkeep. Ichorid triggers first. Any Ichorid's in your grave yard should be coming to the field. Take a look at the order of your grave and make sure to not mess up a nether shadow, and ditch some of those dead cards. (Street Wraith or the most useless dredger) Moving back to end of upkeep, check to see if any nether shadows trigger. If they do, push those suckers right onto the field.
During draw, we are going to dredge again, and keep it going. The rest of the turn plays out like a regular magic deck does, with the exception of sometimes flash backing for "free".
Win cons: 1)Beat down with masses of Narcombias, Nether Shadows, and Ichorid's. Bridge from below also grants us some free zombies while it stays around. 2) At some point dread return a Flayer of the Hatebound and throw damage directly at them simply because something came into play. 3)For a hopeful auto win, dread return a second time to hit Balustrade Spy, self target, and mill everything. Now dread return again for Golgari Grave Troll and win. 4) First step of 3, but instead of the second dread return being for a Grave Troll, make it a Labrotory Maniac. You can then cycle if you saved one, or attempt to wait a turn a win.
There ya have it. There's my no mana legacy deck. It won't be winning any tournaments, but for $130 you can play legacy!
