Control and Extort

Main Deck (60 cards)

Sideboard (0 cards)

No sideboard found.

The owner of this deck hasn't added a sideboard, they probably should...

Submit a list of cards below to bulk import them all into your sideboard. Post one card per line using a format like "4x Birds of Paradise" or "1 Blaze", you can even enter just the card name by itself like "Wrath of God" for single cards.

Deck Description

This started as an Azorius deck with the intent being to use Detain to control. It was/is my first constructed Magic deck and I've yet to really get it to work right. Over the past few months I've added some extort elements into it which works slightly well. Intention is to try and control the board, use extort to chip away and use flyers to get over there and do the damage.

The problem is when I'm controlling the board I can never usually get any damage done. It just doesn't seem to come together. I usually win one round and lose the other two or it just drags out and I draw.

Looking for some help in making it playable, and winable, for Friday Night Magic.

Deck discussion for Control and Extort

I have a few points I want to hit here, so bear with me. =)

1. Your playing a couple to many cards and you need to add a pair of land (I would say Islands) because your mana base is looking a little weak. Even just 2 more land would make a lot of difference. Toss out Archon to make up the difference and Syndic of Tithes to make round it out to 60 after you add the lands in.

2. Ditch Lyev Decree. It isn't good here (or anywhere for that matter). I would toss in something that does damage in its place. Maybe a set of Invisible Stalker would do the trick.

3. You are going to want to have a way to "blink" or "Flicker" your ETB (Enter The Battlefield) effect creatures to get a little more out of them. I recommend using Voidwalk, or you could use Deadeye Navigator. Lavinia on a flicker/blink every round is amazing. Ditch Isperia and the Lawmages to add in something to this effect.

4. Extort thins you out. Get rid of the Knight of Obligations and add in Soulsworn Spirit in it's place.

5. Last Point, I would consider throwing in a few more 1 mana casts. I recommend tossing Protect // Serve and adding the lowly Unsummon. It is always handy and can even be used to get an extra detain out of an ETB creature.

Thanks for the reply. 1 ) would you recommenc basic land or guild gates for those extra land? 3) I've got some Restoration Angels. How about those or is that too high mana cost? 4) should I remove all detain? Like Blind Obedience. I could always sidedeck that one for use against Haste decks? 5) ive got a white 1 mana card that lets you exile a card and then return it. I cant recall its name atm but that blink effect would be better than having to cast the creature again?

The guildgate would do just fine IMO. I would use More Glacial Fortress and Hallowed Fountain as you come across them though.

Resto Angels are amazing. Yes! Use them.

I like Blind Obedience here. You may want to play 2 mainboard and sideboard 2 more.

I dont remember the name either, but yes, that could work.

Flicker effects are definitely needed for detain to work. A set of Restoration Angel's would be amazing here. Ghostly Flicker wouldn't be terrible either.

I would play 2 or even 3 Lavinia's here. She can lock out the majority of someone's board so it's not at all a bad idea to pull more than one. Once the new legend rule rolls out, you can just cast her and keep the one without summoning sickness to replicate the effect.

You need some way to actually win while controlling the board. Geist of Saint Traft can be a pretty quick clock. Ætherling is another powerful option to get in there while they're detained. Both are extremely hard to remove.

I agree. More Lavinia would be good if you can get hold of them. AEtherling is also a champ.

Ghostly Flicker, though, is more of a sideboard card.

Thanks for your comments guys! I've toyed around a little and I'm removing:

Protect & Serve x 2
Ascended Lawmage x 2
Lyev Skyknight x 1
Blind Obedience x 2
Syndic of Tithes x 3
Lyev Decree x 3
Archon of the Triumvirate x 1
Knight of Obligation x 2
Hidden Strings x 1

I'm replacing with:
Righteous Charge x 2
Cloudshift x 2
Restoration Angel x 3
Azorius Guildgate x 2
Lavinia of the Tenth x 2
Artful Dodge x 2
Ætherling x 2

I was wondering of your thoughts of Isperia, Supreme Judge and Tamiyo, the Moonsage. I've managed to finally get the deck balanced out at 60 and I've only got one of each atm. I was thinking about removing Isperia and putting another Tamiyo in. Or removing both and replacing with something else? Maybe putting Invisble Stalker in instead? Thoughts guys?
