My Take on Modern Death & Taxes
After taking this to the Chicago Modern Grand Prix, I realize that for starters, I need either more than 1 sword, or no swords, as I never got this thing on a creature and connected the whole time. Also, Blade Splicer was amazing! He needs to be a 4-of, and even warrants restoration angel being pushed up to 3 or 4 to facilitate the golems (among other interactions). There was one point I was playing against tron, and he had out a wurmcoil, and I had out a blade splicer and 4 golems. I proceeded to swing in for lethal, he thought blocking one would make him live, but first strike killed him before wurmcoil gained him any life, and it was epic. Also, pyroclasm effects are all over the place, so it's good to have something still standing when the flames clear. Geist was as amazing as I thought he would be, good ol swinging with geist into a 3/3, then flashing in restoration angel to bounce him out of combat, (which can also be achieved by vialing in the flickerwisp). Thalia is alot weaker in modern than legacy, and I knew that going into the tournament which is why I cut her to only 3. But in my storm matchup, I landed a thalia with spellskite backup and thought I won, but he just played Goblin Electromancer and canceled her out; canonist is really the only good defense besides rest in peace against that deck, at least for what I had at my disposal. I unfortunately did not get to play against eggs or affinity, but I can only assume my sideboard hate would have sufficed. Spell pierce was very good, as it further facilitated the taxation I was trying to impose on my opponent. Leonin arbiter was also amazing, especially when timed correctly with a ghost quarter (strip mine) or path to exile (swords to plowshares that gives them no life), as the traditional modern death and taxes uses. It probably would have been even better with aven mindcensor, but there just wasn't any room for her. Jund was a rough matchup just because of the hand disruption, which almost makes me want leyline, but drawing leylines is crap in a deck like this. I never drew a spell snare when I sided them in, but they would have been nice. The manabase was fine, and I only got screwed off blue 1 game, and when that happens I can always just ghost quarter myself if I REALLY need it that bad anyways. All in all I was happy with the way this deck preformed, and will be tweaking it should I decide to do more modern in the future. Any suggestions are welcome, and thanks for checking this out.
